Future models - Ford - Bronco - BasecampChinese Ford ‘Bronco’ a possibility for AusAn electrified RHD Ford ‘Bronco’ is a strong maybe for Australia – via China20 Jan 2026 FORD could finally be bringing the famed Bronco nameplate to Australia, with Blue Oval boss Jim Farley confirming at the Detroit motor show that he has “great plans globally” for the iconic model – even if the right-hooker is a watered-down hybrid from China.
The model in question is the Bronco Basecamp – also referred to as the Bronco New Energy – to be built in China in right-hand drive guise, not the T6-based North American Bronco that shares its underpinnings with the Ford Ranger and competes with the Jeep Wrangler.
Not to be confused with the watered-down North American Ford Bronco Sport SUV that is offered downstream of the full-fat 4x4 version, the Basecamp/New Energy is nevertheless a monocoque chassis medium SUV closer to a Toyota RAV4 in dimensions.
Basecamp/New Energy models are offered with battery electric or plug-in hybrid powertrains, using batteries supplied by BYD.
When asked about whether there are any concrete plans to bring the Chinese Bronco Down Under, Ford Australia offered neither confirmed nor denied the possibility of its eventual arrival.
“The Bronco New Energy is an exciting addition to the global Ford line-up, adding a new energy drivetrain to one of the world’s most iconic nameplates,” a Ford Australia spokesperson told GoAuto.
“Ford Australia is always evaluating options to expand our line-up for customers, but we have no news to share about future products at this time.”
Comments made by Mr Farley about the Bronco brand’s global expansion suggests Australia could be in line to receive the newcomer.
“The Bronco line-up is filling out globally, and I don’t think the media has caught onto that yet ... we have great plans globally for Bronco,” he said at the Detroit motor show.
In China, the recently released all-wheel drive electric Bronco produces 332kW with a driving range of up to 650km against the optimistic CLTC testing method, and the range extender variant produces 310kW with an all-electric range claim of 220km.
While not as hardcore as T6-based Bronco models, the higher-spec New Energy models are reportedly offered with off-road features like front and rear differential locks.
The rumour mill, led by China-based Youtuber ‘Wheelsboy’, has also hinted that Ford plans to export the Bronco New Energy to markets like Australia, South-East Asia, South America and the Middle East, none of which been officially confirmed by the car-maker. ![]() Read more13th of January 2026 ![]() Ford opens door to V8 hybrid RaptorHybrid V8 tech flagged as Ford shifts focus to performance-led off-road modelsAll future modelsMotor industry news |
