Tesla moves to subscription model for FSD

It’s now pay-as-you-go for Tesla’s Full Self-Driving functionality

19 Feb 2026

THE OUTRIGHT purchase option for Tesla’s Full Self-Driving FSD (Supervised) feature ends on 1 April across Australia and New Zealand as the manufacturer moves to a subscription-only model for the technology.

The regular fee-for-service means buyers will no longer be able to permanently add FSD(S) at the point of vehicle purchase, with access instead provided exclusively via a monthly subscription.

Tesla says customers wishing to purchase FSD(S) outright must place their order by 31 March 2026 (delivery can be after this date) the manufacturer adding that selected inventory vehicles are currently available with the feature included.

Existing Hardware 4 (HW4) vehicle owners will retain the ability to purchase FSD(S) outright as a post-delivery upgrade via the Tesla app, but only until the same deadline.

Tesla has also confirmed its Enhanced Autopilot (EAP) and FSD(S) transfer program – which allows eligible customers to transfer purchased software between vehicles – will conclude at the end of the current trade-in and trade-up retail campaign on 31 March and will not be extended.

In hard numbers, to access the technology via subscription, FSD(S) pricing for Australia is $149 per month and for New Zealand it’s $159 per month.

Tesla says customers will be notified of the changes from mid-February, with communications outlining key deadlines for outright purchase, software transfers and incentive eligibility.

In justifying the charges Tesla says its move to a subscription-only model for FSD(S) aligns with a broader shift toward software-as-a-service offerings in the automotive sector, as manufacturers look to generate ongoing revenue streams while providing customers with flexible access to advanced driver assistance technologies.

The subscription model is facilitated by over-the-air (OTA) technology being increasingly adopted in new cars for ongoing activations and “improvements”.

OTA also enables subscription features that give manufacturers the capacity to charge monthly or annual fees for a selected service.

Manufacturers are keen to adopt subscription services that are already in place with some (largely) premium brands Down Under as they create a new profit centre.

A degree of buyer resistance is expected to temper its broad adoption in Australia at this point.
