New models - Toyota - RAV4 - phevToyota RAV4 PHEV arrival imminentComing soon: Toyota RAV4 plug-in hybrid range priced from $58,840 + ORC3 Jun 2026 TOYOTA has officially entered Australia’s plug-in hybrid passenger vehicle market with the arrival of the long-awaited RAV4 PHEV, introducing the brand’s first publicly available plug-in hybrid model and its most powerful RAV4 ever.
Available in dealerships from late June, the three model RAV4 PHEV line-up expands Toyota’s multi-pathway electrification strategy and positions the country's best-selling SUV directly against rivals including the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV and Mazda CX-60 PHEV.
Pricing starts at $58,840 for the front-wheel-drive XSE, rises to $63,340 for the XSE AWD, topping out at $66,340 for the flagship GR Sport AWD, all excluding on-road costs.
Toyota Australia vice-president sales, marketing and franchise operations John Pappas described the launch as a significant milestone for the company.
“The arrival of our first plug-in hybrid model further expands our multi-pathway strategy that aims to provide the right powertrain for the right vehicle and its intended use,” he said.
The sixth-generation plug-in hybrid system combines a 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine with Toyota’s latest electric drive technology with combined power outputs of 201kW, 227kW and 227kW in ascending order making the newcomer to most powerful production RAV4 Toyota has offered globally.
Combined torque figures are not quoted.
The AWD models gain a second rear-mounted electric motor providing all-wheel drive capability for the XSE AWD and GR Sport models.
Thanks to the sizeable 22.7kWh lithium-ion battery, the new RAV4 benefits from what Toyota claims to be one of the longest EV-only driving ranges currently available in a mainstream plug-in hybrid SUV.
In hard numbers the XSE 2WD variant’s EV range is 154km NEDC or 121km WLTP while the XSE AWD and GR Sport AWD cover 144km and 113km respectively on each scale.
The battery supports 50kW DC fast charging and 11kW three-phase AC charging allowing owners to maximise electric-only operation for daily commuting while retaining the flexibility of hybrid operation for longer journeys.
The flagship GR Sport variant receives a range of chassis enhancements aimed at delivering a more engaging driving experience.
Changes include a 20mm wider track, dedicated spring and damper tuning, front performance dampers, rear body brace, revised steering calibration, GR-specific aerodynamic package, and exclusive exterior and interior styling.
Toyota says the modifications improve both handling precision and high-speed stability.
Despite the performance upgrades, Toyota has retained the practicality that has made the RAV4 Australia's best-selling SUV.
PHEV-specific additions include a larger brake package, 1500W inverter, three-pin household power outlet in the luggage compartment, and vehicle-to-load capability for powering appliances and equipment.
The inverter allows owners to run camping equipment, tools and small appliances directly from the vehicle’s battery system.
The RAV4 PHEV arrives amid overwhelming demand for the wider sixth-generation RAV4 range.
Toyota secured more than 10,000 pre-orders before the new-generation model reached showrooms and is targeting approximately 40,000 RAV4 sales during 2026.
Industry observers expect the PHEV variants to become some of the most sought-after models in the range, with early demand likely to exceed initial supply allocations.
That could see wait times stretch beyond the current two-to-four-month delays already affecting some RAV4 variants.
The launch marks a notable shift in Toyota Australia's electrification strategy.
While the company has long championed conventional hybrid technology and recently expanded its battery-electric offerings with the Toyota bZ4X, the arrival of the RAV4 PHEV introduces a third mainstream electrified pathway for Australian buyers.
A side benefit of PHEV technology for Toyota is that it represents another step toward lower-emissions mobility with positive NVES implications.
Considering all of the above, it would surprise nobody if the new RAV4 PHEV was one of the most significant new SUV arrivals of 2026.
