New models - BYD - Sealion - 5Details firm ahead of BYD Sealion 5 arrivalBYD Sealion 5 promises to be the most affordable PHEV in its class, orders open December25 Nov 2025 By MATT BROGAN
BYD is set to introduce what it says is the most affordable plug-in hybrid SUV in its segment when it launches the Sealion 5 into the Australian market early next year.
Available to order from December, the Sealion 5 will focus on emissions reduction, low running costs, and all-round practicality, according to BYD, becoming a “compelling” option for government, corporate, and private fleets.
The Sealion 5 will be offered in two trim grades – Essential and Premium – each powered by the Chinese importer’s DM-i Super Hybrid System. BYD says the powertrain is capable of delivering sub-2.0-litre per 100km combined cycle fuel efficiency on a fully charged battery and that the model may be driven up to 100km (NEDC) on electric power alone.
As elsewhere in the BYD portfolio, the DM-i Super Hybrid System combines a 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine with an electric motor, outputting 156kW of total system power. The Essential grade utilises a 12.9kWh battery pack to offer a combined driving range of up to 1000km while the Premium’s 18.3kWh battery can extend that figure to 1030km.
Inside, the Sealion 5 offers equipment highlights that include a 10.1-inch infotainment touchscreen (12.8-inches on Premium), an 8.8-inch digital instrument panel, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Digital Key access via smartphone, and 360-degree camera technology (Premium grade only).
Cargo space is listed at 463 litres with the rear seats in place expanding to 1410 litres all told.
“The Sealion 5 is designed to help Australian businesses transition their fleets toward lower emissions,” said BYD Australia chief operating officer Stephen Collins.
“By combining advanced technology with affordability in Australia’s most popular segment, it helps reduce emissions, support sustainable trade, and creates more opportunities for new energy vehicles, while also giving families a practical, versatile SUV for their everyday needs.
“Australians are feeling the pinch with rising fuel and running costs, and many are looking for more cost-effective mobility solutions.
“The Sealion 5 meets this need by delivering an affordable, efficient, and practical SUV without compromising on comfort, technology, or safety.
Mr Collins said that pricing and further specification details for the Sealion 5 will be revealed closer to the model’s local launch. Expressions of interest are now open with the vehicle available to order from December.
