Volkswagen merges hydrogen fuel cells, solar power and inflatable organic panels10 Nov 2006 By TERRY MARTIN VOLKSWAGEN has unveiled a futuristic "Nanospyder" sportscar at the Los Angeles Design Challenge competition in California. The two-seater uses futuristic nanotechnology supported by hydrogen fuel cells, solar power, wheel-mounted electric motors and inflatable organic body panels that combine to form the unusual shape. The body panels are a lattice mix of organic materials, some of which can inflate to provide further cushioning in the event of a crash. The material doubles as a power source as polysynthesis generates small amounts of electricity. This, coupled with hydrogen fuels, generates power to drive the tiny electric motors mounted within the hubs of all four wheels. Meanwhile, VW has also developed a new high-temperature fuel cell that is claimed to be cheaper, more compact and more efficient than conventional fuel cells.
