Type 01: Jaguar names electric flagship

What's in a name: In Jaguar's new Type 01 nameplate, '0' represents zero tailpipe emissions and '1' represents the first model of a new era.

Jaguar's incoming four-door electric GT revives storied 'Type' nameplate

15 May 2026

JAGUAR has officially named its controversial flagship battery electric model Type 01, ending years of speculation as the British marque prepares for the most consequential model launch in its 104-year history.

According to Jaguar’s official announcement, the Type 01 name pays homage to the brand's legendary 'Type' model designation, used previously on the Le Mans-winning C-Type, the iconic E-Type and recently discontinued F-Type sportscar.

Following the bold move to scrap internal combustion engines, Jaguar confirmed that the '0' denotes zero tailpipe emissions, while the '1' represents the first Jaguar of a new era.

The badge will appear discreetly on what Jaguar calls the strikethrough motif, where the bonnet meets the windscreen, with camouflaged prototypes to be rolled out at the Monaco E-Prix this month as the company prepares for a late-2026 global launch.

While Jaguar is yet to reveal a production-ready model, confirmed details point to it being the most powerful vehicle the brand has ever built.

The Type 01 will use a tri-motor electric powertrain producing more than 735k/1300Nm, rumoured to be underpinned by an 850-volt architecture that draws from a 120kWh battery.

Jaguar is reported to be targeting a driving range of more than 644km which, if achieved, will nudge it ahead of competitors like the similarly powerful Porsche Taycan Turbo GT (605km) and uber-luxurious Rolls-Royce Spectre (530km).

The Type 01 marks the production arrival of the controversial Type 00 concept first shown in 2024, which split opinion with its boxy shooting-brake silhouette and polarising 'Copy Nothing' brand reboot aimed at a young, fashion-forward audience.

It is a clean break from the Jaguar of old, with the entire existing model line-up axed in favour of a low-volume, high-margin assault on high-end luxury brands like Bentley and Rolls-Royce, with little regard for existing fans of the brand.

Overseas pricing is expected to be around US$160,000 ($AU220,000) before options, which is a fair chunk of change more than Jaguar’s first battery electric vehicle – the now discontinued I-Pace ($144,125 + ORC).

"We have reimagined Jaguar for a new era, with inspiration from what has gone before," said Jaguar managing director Rawdon Glover.

"Our engineers have achieved this with a vehicle that looks and drives like no other electric car, yet reflects a unique provenance.”

Jaguar Australia is yet to confirm local pricing or timing for the Type 01.
