New models - BMW - M2 - xDriveM xDrive arrives for BMW’s smallest M coupe……brings AWD traction, quicker acceleration, and new ignition technology to M2 hot rod5 Jun 2026 BMW Australia has expanded its M2 range with the introduction of the all-wheel drive M2 Coupe M xDrive, marking the first time the Bavarian brand’s compact performance coupe has been offered with M xDrive technology.
Priced from $133,100 plus on-road costs, the newcomer commands a $5000 premium over the rear-wheel drive M2 and is scheduled to arrive in Australian showrooms during the fourth quarter of 2026.
The addition of M xDrive brings enhanced traction, stability and acceleration to the M2 package while retaining the rear-biased dynamics that have long characterised BMW M products.
Power continues to come from BMW M’s S58-series twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre six-cylinder petrol engine producing 353kW/600Nm.
Matched exclusively with an eight-speed M Steptronic automatic transmission, the M2 M xDrive completes the 0-100km/h sprint in 3.7 seconds, shaving three-tenths from the rear-drive model’s claim.
BMW says its M xDrive system uses an electronically controlled multi-plate clutch to continuously vary torque distribution between the front- and rear axles according to driving conditions and driver inputs.
Despite the introduction of all-wheel drive, BMW says the system maintains a strong rear-drive character, operating predominantly as a rear-wheel drive vehicle under normal conditions and only engaging the front axle when additional traction is required.
Working in conjunction with the Active M Differential, M-specific traction control and Dynamic Stability Control systems, M xDrive is designed to maximise grip, agility and driver confidence. Drivers can also adjust drivetrain characteristics through the M Setup menu.
The M2 M xDrive also debuts BMW M Ignite Technology, a patented pre-chamber ignition system developed to improve combustion efficiency while helping the engine meet forthcoming Euro 7 emissions requirements.
The technology incorporates a dedicated pre-chamber featuring its own spark plug and ignition coil.
Under higher engine loads and engine speeds, fuel ignited within the pre-chamber generates high-speed flame jets that ignite the air-fuel mixture in the main combustion chamber from multiple points simultaneously.
BMW says the process accelerates combustion, improves efficiency and reduces the likelihood of engine knock, particularly under sustained high-performance driving conditions such as circuit use.
Supporting the new ignition system are a higher compression ratio and turbochargers incorporating variable turbine geometry (VGT), measures BMW says improve engine responsiveness, broaden the torque curve and reduce turbo lag.
Production of the BMW M2 Coupe M xDrive will commence in August at BMW’s San Luis Potosi facility in Mexico.
Alongside the mechanical updates, BMW has expanded the M2’s paint palette with the addition of BMW Individual Borusan Turkish Blue. Buyers can now choose from five metallic finishes, three solid colours and six BMW Individual paint options.
Standard equipment mirrors that of the existing M2 and includes Adaptive M suspension, M Compound brakes, M Drive Professional, M Sport seats, harman/kardon audio, Live Cockpit Professional, wireless smartphone charging, heated front seats and steering wheel, Adaptive LED headlights, and Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go.
BMW says the arrival of M xDrive broadens the appeal of its smallest M coupe, offering greater all-weather capability and improved performance while preserving the engaging driving experience expected of an M car.
